By Dr. Matthew Wilkinson

Saturday, 8th September.  Dr. Matthew Tariq Wilkinson delivered a paper Islamic Critical Realism: a philosophy to serve contemporary Islam at  the inaugural conference for the International Association for Religion, Education and Critical Realism at Oxford Brookes University.  This paper outlined the key philosophical principles of the Islamic Critical Realist position that ‘underlabours’ for the curricular work of Curriculum for Cohesion.

Following this paper, Matthew and Ms. Basma El-Shayyal together delivered a paper entitled Towards an Effective Framework for Religious Education Inspired by Critical Realism. This paper suggested how the fundamental insights of Critical Realism can be brought to bear to conceive of an effective approach to Religious Education.

Both papers generated considerable interest from the conferences delegates, including an invitation to contribute to the University of Cambridge, PGCE Programme in Religious Education.
